Charles T. Atherton

b. 1864 — Born Lowell, 3 May 1864 (Day Genealogy, 1916). Death not yet found.

Also recorded as: Charles Thomas Atherton.

Abel Atherton’s son, a young man of nineteen when the stone house was built, who carried the family’s machine business to Rhode Island.[source]

Attributed profile. Drawn mainly from a research compilation (2025) and secondary sources that we have not yet checked against the originals. Treat the detail as leads, not settled fact; the “Research leads” section says what needs confirming.

Life

The Day family’s genealogy of 1916 is the only record read so far that names Abel Atherton’s son. Charles Thomas Atherton was born in Lowell on 3 May 1864 — so the house on Fairmount Street went up in his twentieth year — and in December 1888, a year after his parents sold it, he married Alice Rebecca Day at Haverhill. The genealogy calls him “a manufacturer of textile machinery”; his children were born at Pawtucket between 1890 and 1899 and at Providence in 1904, which is where the collectors’ accounts also put his father in his last years. The genealogy gives his mother as Mary Ann Conlow, not Georgiana: the Athertons of 1887 were a second marriage.

Sold to Arthur P. Bonney

Georgiana Atherton, with her husband’s consent, conveys the estate "with the buildings thereon" to Arthur P. Bonney, lawyer and former city solicitor. The deed is subject to four mortgages. The state inventory still calls the property the Arthur Bonney Estate.[sources]

What is uncertain: A later compilation says Atherton’s business failed; the mortgages are consistent with financial pressure but do not prove it.

What remains uncertain

  • Whether he lived at Fairmount Street; his death and burial; the 1904 patent and the Atherton Spinning Ring Company, both reported but not yet read.

Research leads (not yet verified)

Clues gathered from the research compilation and from secondary sources. Published so that others can follow them; none has yet been confirmed against an original record.

  • U.S. patent 749,470 (1904), “Charles T. Atherton of Pawtucket and Abel T. Atherton of Warwick, R.I.”; T. R. Navin, The Whitin Machine Works since 1831 (1950), on “the son and heir of Abel Atherton”; Rhode Island death indexes; the obituaries of his children.

Help us get Charles right

This page is a working record, not a finished one. If you are a descendant, a collector, a local historian or an archivist and you hold anything connected to Charles T. Atherton — a photograph, a letter, a diary, an object, a family story, a document we have misread — we would like to hear from you. We publish nothing without permission, credit every contribution, and correct the page when the evidence says we should.

We are especially looking for:

  • A photograph; anything from the Atherton descendants in Rhode Island.
