Georgiana Atherton

Abel Atherton’s wife, in whose name the estate stood when it was sold in 1887.[source]

Attributed profile. Drawn mainly from a research compilation (2025) and secondary sources that we have not yet checked against the originals. Treat the detail as leads, not settled fact; the “Research leads” section says what needs confirming.

Life

Georgiana Atherton appears in the house’s record exactly once: as the grantor of the 1887 deed, the title having been put in her name — a common arrangement when a husband’s business carried debt. Nothing else about her has been established from a document read for this site: not her maiden name, her dates, or where she went after 1887.

On the timeline

Sold to Arthur P. Bonney

Georgiana Atherton, with her husband’s consent, conveys the estate "with the buildings thereon" to Arthur P. Bonney, lawyer and former city solicitor. The deed is subject to four mortgages. The state inventory still calls the property the Arthur Bonney Estate.[sources]

What is uncertain: A later compilation says Atherton’s business failed; the mortgages are consistent with financial pressure but do not prove it.

What remains uncertain

  • Her maiden name (the research compilation gives Spearing, from a source it does not identify), her birth and death, and whether she was the wife Atherton married in Lowell in 1863.

Research leads (not yet verified)

Clues gathered from the research compilation and from secondary sources. Published so that others can follow them; none has yet been confirmed against an original record.

  • The 1863 Lowell marriage index entry for Abel T. Atherton (vol. 163, p. 100) would give the bride’s name; the 1880 census for Lowell and the 1900 census for Pawtucket would give her age and birthplace.

Help us get Georgiana right

This page is a working record, not a finished one. If you are a descendant, a collector, a local historian or an archivist and you hold anything connected to Georgiana Atherton — a photograph, a letter, a diary, an object, a family story, a document we have misread — we would like to hear from you. We publish nothing without permission, credit every contribution, and correct the page when the evidence says we should.

We are especially looking for:

  • Any record naming her: a family Bible, a census page, a gravestone photograph.
