Raymond F. and Rita Rourke

1917–2004 (Raymond) — Raymond: born Lowell, 10 October 1917; died Lowell, 24 May 2004 (obituary and Wikipedia, via the compilation).

Also recorded as: Mayor Raymond Francis Rourke.

A former mayor of Lowell and his wife, among the last residents of the Battles Home when it closed in 2004.[sources]

Attributed profile. Drawn mainly from a research compilation (2025) and secondary sources that we have not yet checked against the originals. Treat the detail as leads, not settled fact; the “Research leads” section says what needs confirming.

Life

By the time the Battles Home closed, its best-known residents were a couple who had spent their lives in Lowell’s public service. Raymond Rourke — St Peter’s Grammar School, Keith Academy, Lowell Commercial College, the Navy in the war — fought the city’s fires, then represented it on Beacon Hill for eighteen years, served in the state transportation department, and was mayor in 1978–79. He and his wife Rita lived here in their last years; a condolence in his obituary comes from someone who “worked at the Battles Home and knew him and his wife”. He died in May 2004, the spring the home closed, and is buried at St Patrick’s Cemetery.

Their names were withheld from this site until the owner decided, in October 2026, that a mayor of the city is a public figure whose residence here is a matter of public record. Anything more personal about their time in the house will be published only with their family’s agreement.

On the timeline

The Battles Home closes

After about 47 years at Fairmount Street, housing up to around eleven residents at a time, the rest home closes. The foundation that ran it dated from 1901 — which is how a "104-year" figure sometimes appears in print.[sources]

What remains uncertain

  • When the Rourkes moved in; Rita’s own life story, which the sources read so far do not give.

Research leads (not yet verified)

Clues gathered from the research compilation and from secondary sources. Published so that others can follow them; none has yet been confirmed against an original record.

  • Raymond Rourke’s obituary (2004) and the Lowell Sun of 2011 for the Battles Home connection; City of Lowell mayoral portrait collection; Pollard Memorial Library local-history files.

Help us get Raymond right

This page is a working record, not a finished one. If you are a descendant, a collector, a local historian or an archivist and you hold anything connected to Raymond F. and Rita Rourke — a photograph, a letter, a diary, an object, a family story, a document we have misread — we would like to hear from you. We publish nothing without permission, credit every contribution, and correct the page when the evidence says we should.

We are especially looking for:

  • Photographs of the Rourkes at the home; recollections from staff or family; Rita Rourke’s maiden name and dates.
