The 1946 city directory lists "Murphy Thos J (Grace L) slsmn h 236 Fairmount": the Murphys lived in the house they owned, Thomas working as a salesman, while other households rented rooms in it. A working file in the archive attaches a biography and a 2004 obituary to a Thomas J. Murphy, telephone repairman; no document ties that man to this one, and the site does not merge them. Grace’s own occupation and family are unestablished.
The deed to Grace L. Murphy of Lowell describes two portions of "Lot 2" on a new plan — the first recorded division of the original estate. The 1946 directory lists Thomas J. Murphy, salesman, and Grace at 236 Fairmount: owners who lived in the house. They mortgaged it in 1949.[sources]
