Kenneth G. Hamilton

1907–2003 — Born Petoskey, Michigan, 8 October 1907; died Lowell, 5 April 2003, aged 95 (obituary, Lowell Sun, April 2003).

An aircraft engineer and champion yachtsman who spent his last four years as a resident of the Battles Home.[sources]

Attributed profile. Drawn mainly from a research compilation (2025) and secondary sources that we have not yet checked against the originals. Treat the detail as leads, not settled fact; the “Research leads” section says what needs confirming.

Life

Of the men who lived at the Battles Home in its last years, Kenneth Hamilton is the one whose obituary tells the most. Born on Lake Michigan in 1907, he spent the war at Bell Aircraft in western New York, where the P-63 Kingcobra and the P-59 Airacomet — the first jet built in the United States — were developed, and patrolled the Canadian border on Lake Erie with the Coast Guard Reserve Auxiliary. After the war he sold yachts and raced them, winning the Freeman Cup, the long-distance race on Lake Ontario, three times as skipper.

Widowed, he came to Chelmsford and then, about 1999, to the Battles Home, where he lived until shortly before his death at a Lowell nursing centre on 5 April 2003, aged 95. The home was then in its last year. His family — a son, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren at his death — are not named here; the obituary is public and linked below.

On the timeline

The Battles Home closes

After about 47 years at Fairmount Street, housing up to around eleven residents at a time, the rest home closes. The foundation that ran it dated from 1901 — which is how a "104-year" figure sometimes appears in print.[sources]

DocumentedThe Battles Home

What remains uncertain

  • The exact years at the home (the obituary says "the past four years"); which of the P-59 and P-63 programmes he worked on and in what capacity; the years of his Freeman Cup wins.

Research leads (not yet verified)

Clues gathered from the research compilation and from secondary sources. Published so that others can follow them; none has yet been confirmed against an original record.

  • The Lake Yacht Racing Association keeps the Freeman Cup winners’ roll, which would give the years and boats; the Lowell Sun feature "Home Sweet Home" (21 Oct 2001) is said by the research compilation to have profiled him — our scan of that page is unreadable and should be re-copied from the original.

Help us get Kenneth right

This page is a working record, not a finished one. If you are a descendant, a collector, a local historian or an archivist and you hold anything connected to Kenneth G. Hamilton — a photograph, a letter, a diary, an object, a family story, a document we have misread — we would like to hear from you. We publish nothing without permission, credit every contribution, and correct the page when the evidence says we should.

We are especially looking for:

  • A photograph; a Freeman Cup result naming his boat; memories of him at the home.
