Statements this record supports

  • C-005 — The architect of the HOUSE is not named in any record found. The 1883 publication cited for a Merrill attribution is American Architect and Building News no. 390 (16 June 1883), whose plate is captioned 'Stable for Mr A. T. Atherton, Fairmount St, Lowell — Merrill & Cutler, Architects, 115 Central St, Lowell' (heliotype elevation and first-floor plan of a stone stable with a conical-roofed round tower, i.e. the carriage house). Merrill & Cutler therefore designed the estate's stable; that they also designed the house is plausible but undocumented.
  • C-038 — 236 Fairmount Street ('Arthur Bonney Estate', 1883, Chateauesque) is a contributing property in the Belvidere Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 26 May 1995 (ref. 95000656); the district's southern boundary runs along the southern line of no. 236. The nomination calls it 'the district's only example of the Chateauesque Style' and notes 'rough-faced ashlar construction' and the porte-cochère; the garage (ca. 1940) and the carriage house (222 Fairmount, 1883) are also contributing.
