Statements this record supports

  • C-057 — Before his machine-company career Atherton sold a patent medicine, 'Dr. Atherton's Medicated Dew Drop Bitters', from about 1866: a period newspaper advertisement names 'Dr. A. T. Atherton, Chemist, Lowell, Mass.' as proprietor, with Boston agents George C. Goodwin & Co. and M. S. Burr & Co.; the bottle (square, amber/olive, embossed DR ATHERTON'S / DEW DROP / BITTERS / LOWELL MASS, dated 1866) is catalogued by Ring & Ham as A 106 and described as extremely rare. The 1865 Lowell directory lists him as a chemist at 27 Clay Street (per the collectors' account).
  • C-058 — Atherton was born about 1840 in Massachusetts and died in 1915 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where the family machine business had moved after 1898.
