No copyright renewal found (searched October 28, 2026, in the Online Books Page inventory of serial renewals, which covers the Catalog of Copyright Entries and the Copyright Public Records System: “no issue renewals found” for the Lowell Sun; the only Lowell Sun renewals found are for syndicated features of 1948–49, not on this page). Published as public domain for want of renewal.

Edith Ames Stevens’s own obituary, printed the day she died “this morning at her home, Kendall road,” Tewksbury. It gives her birth in Washington, D.C., on March 4, 1873, her parents and grandparents, and her survivors. Two details disagree with earlier records: it says she “graduated from Bryn Mawr college” (the college records show two years’ study without a degree, C-519) and that she married in Lowell on June 15, 1896 (the wedding reports give June 17, C-461).

Statements this record supports

  • C-420 — Edith (Ames) Stevens, co-owner of 236 Fairmount Street with her husband from 1925 to 1944, died at Tewksbury on Saturday, December 6, 1958, according to the Lowell Sun of Monday, December 8, 1958 ('The Rambler', read as an index entry) and a family tree; the death record has not been read.
  • C-473 — Edith Ames Stevens died at Tewksbury on Saturday, December 6, 1958, aged 85. The Lowell Sun's columnist 'The Rambler' wrote on Monday, December 8, of 'Edith Ames Stevens who died on Saturday in Tewksbury' after 85 years, noting that the third Pioneer rocket was launched the day she died (Pioneer 3 was launched on December 6, 1958). The column, drawing on the privately printed letters of Blanche Butler Ames and Adelbert Ames, says she was often ill as a child and that the climate of Mississippi so endangered the baby's life that her parents brought her home to Lowell; it says that of the six Ames children two survived her.
