Statements this record supports

  • C-416 — Charles Brooks Stevens and Edith (Ames) Stevens, owners of 236 Fairmount Street 1925-1944, had four children recorded as surviving to adulthood: Ames Stevens (1897-1977), Edith Ames Stevens (1899-1989; Mrs. John P. Stevens Jr.), Harriet Lyman Stevens (1900-1993; Mrs. A. Alexander Robey) and Charles Brooks Stevens Jr. (1902-1981). The Harvard Class of 1886 report (1907) and the June 27, 1949 obituary index for C. Brooks Stevens are cited for the family; the child death dates rest on the Massachusetts death index and a family tree.
  • C-462 — Charles Brooks Stevens attended school in Newport, Rhode Island, before Harvard (A.B. 1886), according to his Lowell Sun obituary; his brother George Stevens (Harvard 1890) prepared at the Newport High School. As an undergraduate he was one of five members of the class of 1886 in the Harvard Natural History Society (founded 1837), according to the class's first Secretary's Report (1886). The class report of 1921 gives his children's colleges: Ames, Harvard 1919; Edith, Bryn Mawr 1920; Harriet, Bryn Mawr 1922; Brooks, Harvard 1924.
  • C-467 — Records of Charles Brooks Stevens's clubs and trusts: in April 1903 he was elected a director of the Long Meadow Golf Club, whose president was Gen. Adelbert Ames, and at the annual meeting of April 1904 'President Brooks Stevens presided'; the 1911 class report calls him a trustee of the Vesper Country Club, and in September 1920 the Vesper members voted to borrow $75,000 on first-mortgage bonds with Arthur G. Pollard, Amasa Pratt and C. Brooks Stevens as trustees of the mortgage; in September 1918 he was named with Butler Ames and Andrew Marshall an executor of the will of Paul Butler; the Union National Bank of Lowell listed him among its directors ('C. Brooks Stevens, Manufacturer') in 1925-27. His 1949 obituary adds directorships of the Union Land and Grazing Company, the Maine Spinning Company and the Whittier Mills Company, a trusteeship of the Lowell General Hospital, and membership in the Yorick Club, the Vesper Country Club, the North Andover Country Club and the Eastern Yacht Club of Marblehead.
  • C-470 — Charles Brooks Stevens died at his home in Tewksbury on the morning of June 26, 1949, aged 84. The Lowell Sun's front-page obituary of June 27 ('C. Brooks Stevens Dies, Aged 84 Years') says he was born in Haverhill, the son of the late George and Harriet Lyman Stevens, attended school in Newport, R.I., took his A.B. at Harvard in 1886, and had been in textile manufacturing in Lowell since 1893, at his death president and director of the Ames Worsted Company and the Lawrence Manufacturing Company; it names his widow, Edith (Ames) Stevens, two sons and two daughters, 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The Textile Bulletin of July 1949 independently reports his death on June 26 at his home in Tewksbury, a textile manufacturer since 1893, president of the Ames Worsted and Lawrence Manufacturing companies and a director of the Whittier Mills Company of Chattahoochee, Georgia.
