Statements this record supports

  • C-139 — Owen J. Tansey, the Bonneys' coachman, declared in his naturalization petition of November 1893 that he lived at No. 172 Fairmount Street and that his occupation was that of a coachman. Born at Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland (the petition gives August 13, 1870; other records 1867), he arrived at Boston on May 15, 1888, married Kate E. Burns at Ayer in 1892, and died June 16, 1955. He left service with the house before 1900, when the directory lists him as a fireman at Wyman's Exchange, living at 286 High Street, and became a Lowell police officer: from 1906 to 1931 the directories list 'Owen J police Market bldg', and the police department rosters of 1906, 1916 and 1926 name him among the patrolmen. He lived at 25 Bowden Street (1906–16) and then at 68 Loring Street with his wife, Catherine A. (1926–31), where he is still listed in 1950.
  • C-154 — Lowell's streets were renumbered during 1893, the change that made No. 170 Fairmount Street into No. 236. In his inaugural address of January 1, 1894, Mayor John J. Pickman told the City Council that 'the buildings in the streets of the city have been renumbered during the past year', under a plan that allowed 'a certain number of feet' to each lot; the Superintendent of Streets reported that the old numbering had left 'many duplicate numbers on the same street.'
  • C-158 — The Fairmount Street renumbering can be read from householders listed at the same house before and after it: old No. 18 became 24 (James C. Abbott), 46 became 62 (Willard A. Brown), 50 became 70 (William G. Ward), 58 became 84 (George A. Marden), 87 became 129 (Charles D. Palmer), 121 became 149 (George W. Dutton), 127 became 157 (Orrin B. Silver), 139 became 175 (Beata Thorne) and 163 became 205 (George A. Chase). Old No. 170, Atherton's house, became 236.
  • C-168 — Before the Home existed, 15 Belmont Street was the house of Mrs. Harriet T. Brown: the 1894 directory lists 'Brown … Harriet T. Mrs. house 15 Belmont', and the 1900 directory 'Harriet T. widow of Horace W. house 15 Belmont', with Warren A. Brown boarding there. After the Home left, 15 Belmont was a private house again.
  • C-176 — The directories trace C. Brooks Stevens's offices and homes. He was superintendent of the United States Bunting Company in 1894 and its treasurer from 1900; treasurer also of the Middlesex Company by 1916; president of the Ames Worsted Company by 1926; president and treasurer of the Lawrence Manufacturing Company by 1931; and in 1946 treasurer of the Heinze Electric Company. He boarded at 24 Huntington Street in 1894, lived at 403 Andover Street in 1900 and 1906, and at Tewksbury from 1916; he never had a directory residence at 236 Fairmount Street.
  • C-186 — Bonney's lesser offices in the directories and in Hurd: a director of the Howard Fire Insurance Company of Lowell in 1859–61; master in chancery for Middlesex in the lists of county officers for 1859 and 1861; a justice of the peace (1859, 1861, 1886, 1894); and, about 1890, president of the Lowell Bar Association, organized in October 1875.
  • C-212 — The Asa Hill of the Asa Hill House is Asa V. Hill, music teacher, not Asa Hill Jr., who died in 1870: the 1875–76 directory lists 'Hill Asa V. music teacher and musical instrument dealer, 129 Central, house 46 Fairmount, Bel.', and old No. 46 is the present 62 (Willard A. Brown is listed at 46 in 1886 and at 62 in 1894). In 1866–70 Hill lived at 25 Willow Street.
  • C-218 — Henry J. O'Dowd, namesake of the O'Dowd Double House, was a bookkeeper in 1886, a dealer in carriages and harnesses (H. J. O'Dowd & Co.) living at 388 High Street in 1894 and 1900, and an insurance agent living at 423 High Street in 1916. He did not live on Mansur Street; Mrs. Mary F. O'Dowd is listed at 42 Mansur Street in 1926.
  • C-219 — Col. Albert Pindar (also printed Pinder), across the street from the stone house, lived at 'rear 239 Fairmount' in 1894, 1906 and 1916 and let the front house: to Alfred Clarke, general manager of the Eastern Electric Light and Storage Battery Company, in 1894; to Harry C. Raynes, architect, in 1900; and from 1906 to the lawyer James J. Kerwin, who was still there in 1926. In 1900 Pindar was superintendent of the City Farm and lived there. In 1875-76 Albert Pinder, of the police, was at old No. 181 Fairmount.
  • C-220 — David E. Chase lived at old No. 163 (the present 205) Fairmount Street, opposite Whitman Street, in 1875-76 and died on November 5, 1885; George A. Chase, of Boston, is listed at the house in 1886 and, as No. 205, in 1894. David E. Chase is not in the Lowell directories of 1858, 1861, 1866, 1868 or 1870, so the roster's 'about 1856' for the house is not supported by them.
  • C-221 — The Mardens lived at 84 (old 58) Fairmount Street without a break from at least 1880 to 1936: George A. Marden was assessed for a sewer on Fairmount Street in 1880, is listed at 58 Fairmount in 1886 and at 84 in 1894, his widow Mary Porter Marden in 1916, and their son Philip S. Marden, editor-in-chief of the Courier-Citizen, in 1926–36. Coburn writes that 'Mr. Marden made his home for the last thirty-five years of his life at 84 Fairmount street.'
  • C-222 — The 'T. Tweed' of the T. Tweed / H. Pollard House was Timothy G. Tweed, apothecary (Carleton & Hovey, 164 Merrimack Street), listed at old No. 82 (the present 96) Mansur Street in 1886; his widow Mary H. was there in 1894, and Harry G. Pollard by 1906. City water had been run 'on Mansur street to the house of T. G. Tweed' in 1882.
  • C-227 — Russell (1891) describes 227 Nesmith Street as 'a cosy house built and occupied by the widow of the late William A. Burke'; the 1894 directory lists 'Elizabeth D. widow of William A. house 227 Nesmith'.
  • C-231 — Levi Sprague, contractor, moved from 47 Nesmith Street (1866) to 'Mansur, near Fairmount' (1868); as president of the Traders' and Mechanics' Insurance Company and of the Erie Telegraph and Telephone Company he was at 52 (old 44) Mansur Street in 1894.
  • C-234 — Artemas S. Tyler, first cashier of the Prescott Bank (1850-1871) and from 1854 first treasurer of the Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank, lived at 148 East Merrimack Street in 1886 and at 57 Fairmount Street by 1894; he 'died at his home on Fairmount Street, October 14, 1901, at the age of 77 years.'
  • C-235 — Albion C. Taylor, of Cook, Taylor & Co., moved from 50 Bartlett Street (1875–76) to 'Fairmount, east of reservoir' (1886), listed as No. 166 in 1894; his widow Susan E. was there in 1916.
  • C-236 — Moses Little, Albion C. Taylor's partner in Cook, Taylor & Co., lived at 9 Elm Street in 1875–76, at old No. 63 Mansur Street in 1886, and at No. 77 in 1894 and 1900.
  • C-237 — George W. Dutton, carpenter and later overseer at the Lowell Machine Shop, lived at old No. 121 Fairmount Street in 1875–76 and 1886 and at No. 149 in 1894 and 1900; Jennie S. Dutton was there in 1926.

  • C-240 — James W. B. Shaw, a dry-goods merchant in 1859–68, was chairman of the Board of Health in 1886, living on 'Belmont av. cor. Talbot'; in 1894 he was in real estate at 47 Belmont Avenue, and the 1906 directory records that he 'died Jan 14 1906'.
  • C-241 — John A. Faulkner, of Luther W. Faulkner & Sons, was still on Faulkner Street in 1886 and is listed in 1894 at 'house 32 Belmont av. opposite Ma[nsur]'; in 1900 he was agent of the Bay State Mills and president of the Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank.

Abbott moved from 10 Kirk Street (1868) to Fairmount Street (1870), and is listed at old No. 18 in 1875–76 and 1886, when he was mayor and president of the First National Bank, and at No. 24 in 1894; his widow Philena was there in 1916. Coburn gives his birth at Andover on June 3, 1823.
  • C-243 — David Nichols lived on Belmont Street near West Pine in 1886 and at 30 Talbot Street in 1894; in 1900 'Emeline A. widow of David' is listed there. The Kerwins of 239 Fairmount lived at 30 Talbot Street by 1931.
