Statements this record supports

  • C-157 — The hill above the house is Lynde's Hill in the histories, never 'Fairmount': Cowley (1868) says it takes its name from Colonel Joseph Lynde, who pursued the raiders of August 1695 and 'fortified it, and for some time occupied it with his command', and that 'in 1849, the reservoir on Lynde's Hill was constructed by the Locks and Canals Company, under the direction of James B. Francis'; Coburn (1920) dates the reservoir to 1848. In 1869 the city described the reservoir as 'on Lynde's Hill, so called in Tewksbury', and in 1904 the Locks and Canals pipe ran 'from their reservoir on Lynde's Hill through Fairmount, Mansur, Nesmith and East Merrimack Streets'.
  • C-242 — James C. Abbott moved from 10 Kirk Street (1868) to Fairmount Street (1870), and is listed at old No. 18 in 1875–76 and 1886, when he was mayor and president of the First National Bank, and at No. 24 in 1894; his widow Philena was there in 1916. Coburn gives his birth at Andover on June 3, 1823.
