The plate is the estate’s stable (today’s carriage house), not the house. Wikipedia’s "Atherton house" entry mis-describes it; the architect of the house itself remains unrecorded.
Statements this record supports
- C-005 — The architect of the HOUSE is not named in any record found. The 1883 publication cited for a Merrill attribution is American Architect and Building News no. 390 (16 June 1883), whose plate is captioned 'Stable for Mr A. T. Atherton, Fairmount St, Lowell — Merrill & Cutler, Architects, 115 Central St, Lowell' (heliotype elevation and first-floor plan of a stone stable with a conical-roofed round tower, i.e. the carriage house). Merrill & Cutler therefore designed the estate's stable; that they also designed the house is plausible but undocumented.
- C-028 — The estate's carriage house — the 'Stable for Mr A. T. Atherton' by Merrill & Cutler published in June 1883 — stands northeast of the house and is today a separate private residence at 222 Fairmount Street (NRHP nomination 1995: 'Arthur Bonney Estate Carriage House, 222 Fairmount St., 1883', contributing).
