The Middlesex County Courthouse
Not stone, but the tower on the skyline belongs to the same family of civic landmarks — and it is the castle’s courthouse: Charles S. Lilley presided here.
The oldest of the group and the odd one out in material: Ammi Young’s courthouse of 1850 — his only Lowell design — is brick, not stone, with wooden window hoods and an arched cornice, and its tall octagonal clock tower carries the scales of justice. In 1895 the building was moved to the rear of its lot and a Neoclassical front built along Gorham Street. This is the court in which Judge Lilley sat as a justice of the Superior Court from 1893 to 1900.
